UHA Handymen are screened and certified

The UHA is a place where a Handyman can go through a screening process to get certified. Giving them the tools needed to gain customer trust. We are a place that the homeowner looking for a handyman can gain piece of mind that their handyman has passed a background screening and certified that their business is set up properly to protect not only the handyman’s business but the homeowner itself.  To become a certified member of the UHA is a privilege and only the handyman that takes great pride in his business will be excepted.  We at the UHA believe that the only way for us to be an association that is trustworthy is to have a strict membership process that filters out the handyman that we wouldn’t use and wont stand behind or recommend for others to use.  Since anyone that has skills with their hands can become a handyman regardless of past or present practices with no regulations in most states.  The UHA was founded to created a place to regulate and give the quality individual a way to shine and prove that he has the character and integrity to earn your trust as a potential customer. The truth is a Man can commit a crime of any nature and upon release become a handyman in your neighborhood. You deserve to know who you are hiring and allowing into your home with your children.  We are not saying that no one deserves a second chance after their crime was paid for, we treat everyone on an individual bases. What we are saying is that you have the right to know who you are hiring and should be able make that choice for yourself.  We hope that you help our efforts of improving the home repair industry by asking your handyman or future handyman to get certified by the UHA.

Santa Clause receives Certificate of Excellence from the UHA

RNJ Handyman of Ventura County California serves as Santa Clause20131221_162837 (2)

My kids saw a picture of me giving Santa a certificate for becoming a certified handyman and asked me why.  Thinking quickly I said because Santa is like a handyman because he makes his own toys.  That seemed to sit well with them at 5 and 7 years old.

We start off the year with our January Member profile of a handyman who has been doubling as Santa Clause during the holidays in a Camarillo California strip mall.  Maurice Bealieu of RNJ Handyman is a certified member of the UHA and has been a quality handyman for over 13 years.  I went to the strip mall to witness his interaction with the neighborhood children this past December and to personally present his UHA certificate of Excellence. RNJ Handyman located in Ventura County California serves all the surrounding areas and does quality work at a reasonable price. RNJ and Maurice have passed the UHA screening process and the UHA would recommend this handyman to help with all your home repair needs.  His knack for volunteering and putting a smile on the faces of children during the holidays might be the perfect handyman to welcome into your home.  RNJ Handyman can be found at  www.reeseandjaime.com or at his UHA member page http://theuha.net/rnj-handyman-services/

You log on to www.handyman.pro and view the company profile.  You see a copy of their insurance, business license and confirm that they are certified and passed a background screening.  You see that they are covered by the UHA fraud protection and their workers are also UHA certified.  You ask the company rep on the phone who will you be sending to do my repairs.  After learning the name you search the UHA site and view a picture of the handyman, a list of qualifications and possibly a resume.  You confirm that the handyman is certified and are comfortable knowing that he passed the UHA screening.  You decide that this handyman is sufficient and you proceed with hiring the handyman.  The individual and business handyman memberships offered by the UHA make this possible.  The individual handyman may be looking for a job and his membership becomes an online resume.  Just another step in our efforts to improve the home repair industry one handyman at a time.

Insurance or no insurance? A handyman’s struggle

In an industry that has little recognition and no regulations or expectations other than dollar amounts it is far too easy for the handyman to get caught without insurance.  When starting a business it is normal to try to keep your over head down.  Since the handyman doesn’t have to show proof of insurance to anyone or organization than it naturally becomes one of the options in the beginning to cut costs.   As the business grows you would think that any respectable business would carry insurance but the fact is that most handyman businesses are uninsured. Why is this?  We’ll the truth is that most people when asked about insurance their response is overwhelmingly negative, rather its health, automotive or home. If it wasn’t required by a DMV or Mortgage company then some if not most would go uninsured.  With no requirement for a handyman to be insured the temptation is too great.  The thoughts become If I only do small jobs then I don’t need it.  or If I’m careful it will be fine.  The smart homeowner or business man realizes that it isn’t the amount or size of the job that determines the amount of damage that can be caused.  The truth is that the handyman can’t afford to be without insurance.  The cost is minimal in comparison to the rewards.  The insured handyman can charge more and in most cases the homeowner will gladly pay more for the piece of mind that their home and family are protected.  The UHA requires insurance from its members.  If you hire a UHA certified handyman then you can be sure that just like the DMV or mortgage companies the handyman is required to carry business liability insurance.   We even post a copy of their proof of insurance on our site for you to view even before you decide to call them.  Homeowners make sure your handyman is insured.  There is no reason to settle If every business is required to have a policy then the handyman will carry insurance from day one.  This is just one example of how the UHA is trying to make a difference in the home repair industry.  When you call a handyman the first questions should be 1. Do you have a proper business license?  2. Do you have insurance?  3. Are you certified by the UHA?  4. What is your UHA membership number or profile link?  If they cant answer yes to the first 3 questions then you should move on to the next one.  You want a handyman that cares enough about their business that reflects on how they do business.

Handyman Requirement

Have you or anyone you know ever been the victim of a bad handyman or contractor?  Did they misrepresent themselves? Misrepresenting is considered fraud.  If you enter into an agreement with a service provider under the assumption that you will be provided a certain type or quality service and the service provided falls short, then this might be considered fraud.  It happens and there is nothing you can do about it.  Wrong!! There is absolutely something you can do about it.  Require all your service providers to be certified by the UHA.  We can check them out, certify them and cover them for fraud. The cost to the homeowner is nothing but the benefit can be priceless.  Since the UHA pays the customer back for their loss in the case of fraud, The customer has options now to protect themselves.  Require all your service providers to carry a UHA or UHSPA certification prior to hiring them. Now if you are a victim it’s your fault.

Handyman business coaching

Sometimes we need a boost to get started.  Sometimes we need help to get out of a rut.  We might be the best at what we do but have trouble with other parts of business.  If you’re a great handyman and your business is struggling or slow it might not have anything to do with the quality of your work.  Just like being to proud to ask for directions can leave you embarrassed and lost, not having the right business plan or structure can leave you with no one to show your handyman skills to.  All of the biggest companies and corporations in the world have business coaches or management teams.  Successful business owners recognize their weaknesses and concentrate on their strengths.  Learn to delegate your weaknesses.  Most people that start a service type business do so because the service part is their strength.  Maybe running the business part or knowing how, is their weakness and that’s why so many start and fail within their first year.  What is your strengths and weaknesses? Do you spend more time trying to figure out what or how to manage your business than you spend actually doing it.  Example: I bet when it comes to the service part you jump right in because it comes natural.  Maybe its time to refer to some help in the areas that you may need assistance so you can focus on what you do best.  The UHA can be your business coach.  Register as a member for free then order business coaching in the member area.  Phone and in person coaching available in some areas.  Here’s to the happy handyman.
