Trick or Treat

It’s Halloween and we want to hear from you. Share your scary contractor or handyman stories. Everyone has one or knows someone who does.  We at the UHA support and stand behind our members that exhibit the business professionalism that is expected by the UHA. On the other hand if there is a handyman that the public should be warned about then we will share it on our national do not use list. We can’t expect our members to show a commitment to excellence if your standards and expectations don’t require the same. We always appreciate the good stories about handyman experiences but we also want to expose and filter out the bad ones. So need your help by sharing your experiences.

State Farm Insurance vs the handyman

The UHA met with a State Farm Representative to discuss business liability insurance for the handyman.  The response was a bit unexpected but not surprising.  It wasn’t that long ago that a handyman couldn’t get insurance because it wasn’t considered a real trade. Although the handyman industry has come a long way of recent and insurance is available.  It seems that State Farm is still stuck in the past. The message was clear State Farm doesn’t insure the handyman. The reason given was ” Handyman is not a specific trade” or “We only insure specific trades”.  Handyman is a home repair professional and a necessary occupation for home repair. If a contractor has to perform a minimum of two trades and specialty contractors can only perform one trade per job then the handyman who can do one or more trades in the same visit is a valuable trade. Sounds pretty specific to me. We approached State Farm because we thought being teamed up with one of the largest insurance companies in the US would be a great benefit for our members but don’t be alarmed there are plenty of insurance companies that have turned the page to welcome the handyman.

The U.H.A Is In Your Corner

If you have a handyman business or wish to start one then a membership to the UHA should be your next step.  Having the UHA in your corner could mean a world of difference.  The many benefits of becoming a certified handyman are unmatched by any other organization.  I have been in the handyman business for over 26 years.  I have found that the work was the easiest part.  Every handyman has a similar story.  Always had a knack for tools and repairing things.  I have had several employees over the years that have come to work for me to get experience.  After some time they all tried to spread their wings and go out on their own.  Most of the time they either came back because they realized that they were good at the work but the business side of it was not for them.  Owning a business is not for everyone, some people need to work for someone else and just collect a paycheck.  For those who want to be their own boss and own a business need a plan, goals to succeed.  I founded the UHA for just that, to be in your corner to offer the business support you need to succeed.  I have been giving advice to handymen for several years now.   Appearing on NBC news in 2001, I ran a Handyman Answers group on facebook that brought handyman questions from two countries.  Offering free advice to both the handyman and the homeowner.  Through the UHA I am sharing my experience in both the field and running successful businesses.  I believe that I have put together a team of professionals and an organization that will help any handyman succeed.  Having a certification and customers knowing that you are backed by the UHA gives them the piece of mind that could be the difference you need to get the job over the other guy every time.  We support you both physically and financially.  Every other legitimate trade has an association that brings them together.  Now every handyman can come together and take advantage of the many benefits.  We can help you with every aspect of your business or just offer you a certification that matters.

Background and screening

Don’t invite strangers into your home

Handymen and home repair professionals are linked to crime every day from thefts and scams to kidnappings, rape and even murder.  If you could know everything about the home repair professional before you hire them, would that help you feel safe?  If you found out the handyman had a criminal history, would you hire him?  When you meet an electrician at Home Depot and think he seems nice, is that enough?  Isn’t that what every victim says…after the fact?  Everyday people take such precautions when it comes to protecting their children by teaching them not to talk to strangers, etc.  In reality, when you hire someone that you know little about you are, in fact, bringing a stranger into your home and, in turn, exposing your children to them.  Remember Elizabeth Smart?  She was just fourteen years old when she was kidnapped by their handyman.  Truth is, there is no place we should feel more secure than in our home.  Home professional screening by the U.H.A is the perfect solution.  Get your potential hire checked out by an organization that specializes in the home repair industry.  The U.H.A takes it one step further with a guarantee making it well worth being safe.  If the U.H.A screens a home professional and gives them a certified rating they then offer a fraud protection guarantee.  If the certified professional commits fraud toward you, the U.H.A will pay you back for your losses.  Food for thought: isn’t that a double benefit?  Know who you’re hiring and knowing your money is safe also.  Just become a member of the U.H.A and you qualify. If you have a handyman you already use, the U.H.A will do a certification screening on them for free.  Truth is, If they can’t be certified you should be asking yourself if you should be using them at all.  See you in the member area at the U.H.A.!

Certified Handyman vs Licensed Contractor

If you hire a Licensed Contractor to do Handyman work then you may not be covered by their insurance. A General Contractor is required by their License to perform two different trades per job. If something happens on your property that requires an insurance claim to be filed then upon investigation the insurance company may not pay on the claim. Laws vary state to state but in California it is a $500 fine if a Contractor works outside of his License.  Although laws governing Contractors and the Handyman vary by state, most states have laws that are designed to restrict both. In the State of California a Handyman must stay within $500 on jobs performed. A Handyman doing a job over $500 is subject to a $10,000 fine and up to 6 months in jail.  In most cases you should hire a Licensed Contractor to perform larger type jobs and a Handyman to perform the smaller repair type jobs.  However unlike state agencies would like you to believe you do not need a Licensed Contractor to do Larger jobs performed on your home.  In most cases when a homeowner is happy with and trust their Handyman they can do just about any job without the use of a Licensed Contractor.  We recommend that you check the laws regarding Hiring a Handyman and Contractors before you perform work on your home. Members of the UHA enjoy the benefit that we do the research for you.
